1/2 Bushel

One of my favorite fall activities is going apple picking. Farms seem to be one of those things that it's hard to get to without a car. After trying to go last weekend and not being able to get a Zipcar this weekend I was determined. I actually assumed that we would be pumpkin picking instead as most orchards are no longer picking. A little bit of internet research revealed that we could go to Shelburne Farm and still do both!

To pick apples you pay for a bag (a peck or a half bushel) and then get to go and fill it up. I was so excited that we hadn't missed our chance that I went for the half bushel bag and we filled it with 4 kinds of apples. I find it to be such a grounding experience to be out in the fresh air, with the leaves changing colors, surrounded by these strong old trees sharing their beautiful fruit. There are always kids running around, a reminder of where we came from, but you can always find quiet hidden corners with trees aching to be relieved of the weight of their fruit. It's a way to connect with where some of our food comes from and be thankful for the incredible work of farmers that sustains us all and the bounty of the earth kissed by sun and rain.

We picked pumpkins from a small field. We'll spend some time with them to decide how to carve them.

There was also live music

And freshly made apple cider doughnuts, yum!

We made a stop at another farm on our way home, Wilson Farm, to pick up produce and saw some of their haunted fields. Their giant black widow spider was impressive.
